Ingeborg Bachmann ranks among the best known postwar Austrian authors. Critical acclaim for her poetic works thrust her into the literary limelight when she appeared on the cover of 'Der Spiegel' in 1954. Since then, interest in Bachmann's work, both as the subject of scholarly inquiry and as an element of popular culture, has continued. She can be considered on a par with such authors as Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf.
