Curious Boy

The palaeontologist Richard Fortey looks back on a lifelong fascination for nature, kindled while following his father along a Berkshire stream and fostered by garden-shed experiments and hunts for fungi and fossils. He recalls the financial ruin that overtook his family in his teens and his father’s death in a car crash, before describing his studies at Cambridge and the career that took him from Nevada to the Arctic.
